چکیده

XML is emerging as a new major standard for representing data on the world wide web. Several XML storage models have been proposed to store XML data in different database management systems. The unique feature of model-mappingbased approaches is that no DTD information is required for XML data storage. In this paper, we present a new modelmapping-based storage model, called XParent. Unlike the existing work on model-mapping-based approaches that emphasized on converting XML documents to/from database schema and translation of XML queries into SQL queries, in this paper, we focus ourselves on the effectiveness of storage models in terms of query processing. We study the key issues that affect query performance, namely, storage schema design (storing XML data across multiple tables) and path materialization (storing path information in databases). We show that similar but different storage models significantly affect query performance. A performance study is conducted using three data sets and query sets. The experimental results are presented.

Fast Evaluation of Multi-source Star Twig Queries in a Path Materialization-based XML Database

Despite a large body of work on xml twig query processing in relational environment, systematic study of xml join evaluation has received little attention in the literature. In this paper, we propose a novel and non-traditional technique for fast evaluation of multi-source star twig queries in a path materialization-based rdbms. A multi-source star twig joins different xml documents on values i...

A clustering method based on path similarities of XML data

Current studies on the storage of XML data are focused on either the efficient mapping of XML data onto an existing RDBMS or the development of a native XML storage. Some native XML storages store each XML node in a parsed object form. Clustering, which means the physical arrangement of objects, can be an important factor in improving the performance in this storage model. In this paper, we pro...

ARAXA: an object-relational approach to store active XML documents

Active XML (AXML) documents combine extensional XML data with intentional data defined through Web service calls. The dynamic properties of these documents pose challenges to both storage and data materialization techniques. We present ARAXA, a non-intrusive approach to store AXML documents. It takes advantage of complex objects from object-relational DBMS to represent both extensional and inte...

Query Rewriting over Generalized XML Security Views

We investigate the experimental effectiveness of XML security views. Our model consists of access control policies specified over DTDs with XPath expression for datadependent access control policies. We provide the notion of security views for characterizing information accessible to authorized users. This is a transformed (sanitized) DTD schema that is used by users for query formulation. To a...

On Fine-Grained Access Control for XML

Fine-grained access control for XML is about controlling access to XML documents at the granularity of individual elements or attributes. This thesis addresses two problems related to XML access controls. The first is efficient, secure evaluation of XPath expressions. We present a technique that secures path expressions by means of query modification, and we show that the query modification alg...
